Mike carves up a fantastic and entertaining read again! In this book Mike again goes against conventional beliefs and replaces them with easy to implement steps that really work! Ever feel like you’re bobbing up and down in a sea of competitors, some of which seem to have all the luck in catching the major waves? I’ve got news for you my fellow surfer dude/dudette, luck doesn’t happen to us, we have to know how to spot the signs of imminent trends in the market and learn how to ride in the pocket of these major swells. Mike will show you the way!
Another amazing book from Michalowicz. I have his preceding book, Profit First, which I have seen make businesses successful. Those making little money were able to now pay themselves a salary and even get paid a bonus several times a year. Get Profit First and Surge. You can't go wrong.
As always Mike brings to the world of small business and entrepreneurs just relevant and useful concepts and tools. I have being a fan of Mike since his first book, he is one of the few business authors that gets real, have walked the path since he is and has being a successful entrepreneur / small business owner with multiples failures (is the only way to be a successful entrepreneur). Among the thousands and thousands of business authors out there, he definitely steps out of the crowd. The first thing that I recommend to all entrepreneurs and small business owners when I have the chance to talk with them is you have to read these 5 books over and over The Emyth Revisited of Michael E. Gerber (by the way Mike also recommended), The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur, The Pumpkin Plan, Profit First and now Serge by Mike Michalowicz. Plain and simple, there are a lot of great business books out there, but if you have to choose a top 5, these are.
Look for loopholes in any sector and find a solution to make it better, then use the 80/20 rule to target the best customers from the lot, and ride the wave until it comes to an end, then repeat.
Be on the lookout for disruptors; if you can't beat them try buying them out.
You could use Google Trends, or better yet, read any blog post on the Web, to get the same information.
You won't miss much by not reading this book!
I first heard of Mike’s books through Profit First. I was really drawn to how the book presents the material engaging and and informing. I went on to read the Pumpkin Plan, The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur, and now SURGE.
In Surge, Mike takes a surfing analogy on riding waves to timing the markets for your business. He illustrates the concepts with real-world examples, such as Ugg and how their business evolved. This book is about bringing your business processes into sharp focus, finding on a niche to target your product/service, and working smarter, not harder.
Surge takes your through the different steps of surge and how to time your way into and to the top of the market. I like his processes are structured and well thought out. Whether you are a start-up or have been in business a while, this book could benefit your business in identifying your market and appealing to these customers and growing your business.
I'm a little surprised at the 5 star review. I was guessing it would be a 3.5 stars and I would come in with a 5. Instead I'll make it 4 stars
First, this isn't the best business book of all time. I don't think it has mass readership appeal. It's not going to be a classic like Profit First (but I don't think it is intended to be). I told someone about this book yesterday and when they asked me what it is about, I stumbled through my words. I actually don't know what it is about to you or how it applies to you.
To me, however, however, this book was very helpful and powerful because it caught me at the perfect time in my life where I needed to read this. I immediately was able to make some decisions about my business that make me feel really good and more confident. It didn't just get me excited or motivated. Rather at some point in the story line I recognized myself and where I am at and there is enough how-to action steps in the book to make it easy to apply.
For those that are reading on here...I'm not sure who the demographic is for this book. I can't think who I would give it to. Perhaps it's best for those semi-successful entrepreneurs that are actively running a pretty good business now---or someone who is already mildly successful and has the luxury to carefully pick their next venture. They've done it "well" but they want to take it to the next level. Or not really the next level...this book is about how to take it to the TOP level. Trust the process. Keep up the good work Mike!
I'm going to be honest here Mike Michalowicz did NOT re-invent the wheel with this book. The concepts in this book are hardly new. A general theme in the book is that there's really no such thing as luck, but rather a science to spotting trends. A pattern, if you will, one that any business owner that's watching for them can detect. Right in the introduction, Mike states "luck is about foresight paired with strategic action."
That's what surge is. It's the strategy to spot the trends, get in on them at the right time, then ride that wave to industry success. But what I love the most about this book is that Mike also stresses the importance of not only when to capture the right wave (not too soon, not too late), but also the importance of recognizing when to get out. Knowing when all the energy of a wave is kaput and you need to begin spotting the next big kahuna wave of domination.
So, why dock a star if I love it so much? Mike clearly states that this is the first book in a three-book series, but it still feels like it's missing something. He does a good job of referencing his prior books but keeps me wondering what the next two steps are in the process of total domination. He also mocks Def Leppard...I don't stand for that. ;-)
