I was excited about reading this book as I have taught the Bible as Literature for over thirty years and was familiar with some of the material. Unfortunately, I found it disappointing in a couple of ways. Most obviously, the book is in need of a good editor and some basic proofreading. It is riddled with poor grammar, wrong word choice, and just plain careless errors.More seriously for me was the predictable research that rehashed old ideas debunking the Christian mythology. The material about Egypt, for example, and the theories about Mary Magdalene, have been "uncovered" and written about before. That isn't to say that they might not be valid theories. We really have no idea at all what happened in ancient Palestine in the early years of the first century CE. It's all speculation and there's not a thing wrong with that approach to the puzzle of the Judaeo-Christian Scriptures. Rigby bases his narrative on some good sources and it's clear he has done a great deal of work.
What weakens his arguments the most is the clear bias against Christian doctrine and the organized church in particular. I don't have a need to express an opinion about that large and controversial area, but the evident one-sidedness of the book takes away from the theories to which he is committed and to which he has evidently devoted a lot of time and passion.
It seems a shame to have put this kind of effort and dedication over several years into a document that both in form and in substance doesn't serve itself very well.

Interesting and well researched. An interesting hypothesis that is backed up with plenty of excerpts from other texts and sound interpretations of the research done. Unfortunately, it is not as well written as I would expect a book expounding on such a topic to be. Numerous structuctural, grammatical, and other mistakes greatly take away from what is clearly hours of research and well-thought-out analysis. With a good round of editing, I would give this book another point or two.
